Overview

The Labourer, Parks Services “Takes care of Banff” by leveraging learned skills and experience in the care and maintenance of the Town’s public green spaces.

You enjoy the variety of year-round and seasonal duties and work locations, including: municipal parks and parkettes, cemeteries, playgrounds, and our Recreation Grounds amenities (multisport field, ball diamonds, skatepark, dog park, pump track, playground, tennis and basketball courts). With an eye for detail, you focus on keeping areas clean and safe for the use and enjoyment of the public. As a “seasoned” labourer, your coworkers look to your experience and in providing direction and guidance in performing work duties.

Key Responsibilities:

Conducts all job duties and interactions with a focus on the Town of Banff’s employee Mission and Values: Integrity, Teamwork, Accountability, Efficiency and Professionalism.

The following accountabilities are representative and do not reflect a comprehensive list of job duties.

Skill and experience in the operation and basic maintenance of the following:

  • Vehicle and equipment operation, including:
    • Trucks equipped with air brakes and trailers
    • Backhoe, Loaders, Toolcat, Tractor, Sanders, Plows, etc.
    • Electric Utility Vehicles
  • Associated light equipment & power tools, including:
    • Snow-clearing equipment (walk-behind/power brooms, snow blowers, etc.)
    • Power washer, lawn mower, etc.
    • Other manual, electric or gas-powered hand tools (trimmers, etc.)

Foundational labourer duties, including:

  • Grass mowing and trimming in all parks services locations and sites
  • Cemetery and Playground inspections, services and maintenance
  • Litter-picking, general cleaning and garbage removal, splitting and stacking firewood.
  • Special events support – delivery of equipment, set-up, tear-down, etc.
  • Snow removal, including sidewalks, pathways, etc.
  • Independent performance of tasks and appropriate team collaboration
  • Compliance with employee and workplace policies, procedures and programs
  • General maintenance associated with turf and irrigation management

Alignment with Health and Safety (H&S) program and Alberta OHS legislation, including:

  • Participation in H&S committee, policies and procedures as required
  • Following established safe work practices and use of Personal Protective Equipment
  • Reporting incidents and injuries, as well as near misses
  • Identifying hazards and reporting workplace risks
  • Performing physical demands of the position, including:
    • Working outdoors in all weather conditions (extreme heat, cold, precipitation)
    • Maintaining physical stamina for majority of scheduled shift – up to 10 hours
      • Walking, standing, getting in and out of equipment, etc.
    • Lifting, pulling, pushing up to 23 kgs/50 lbs repeatedly
    •  Manual dexterity in use of specific tools and equipment
  •  Meeting the cognitive demands of the position, including:
    • Exercising judgement and decisions appropriate to tasks and safety
    • Meeting deadlines and due dates in performance of tasks
    • Interacting with members of public in professional and helpful manner
    • Demonstrating behaviours of a respectful workplace of inclusion and belonging
    • Interpreting and responding to written and verbal information and instructions
  • Other position and performance expectations, include:
  • Assisting with department response to Action Requests related to Municipal Parks
  • Attending and participating in daily/weekly/monthly departmental meetings, training and programs
  • Working shift work and as scheduled across a 7-day a week operation
  • Participating as scheduled in the Operations “on-call” program

Education, Experience and Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years work experience as labourer (preferably in a municipality), requiring job duties in landscaping and turf maintenance, including:
    • Care and appearance of municipally serviced parks, recreational and green spaces
    • Health and safety legislation, WHMIS workplace programs and safety policies, procedures
    • Use and care in operation of related vehicles, tools and equipment
    • Basic computer and data entry/tracking skills in Microsoft Office (Outlook, Word, Excel)
    • Shifts and scheduling across 7-days per week and participation in on-call schedule/program
  • Possess a valid Alberta Class 5 driver’s license and a clear Drivers’ Abstract on hire
  • The following are assets in this position:
    • Flag person certificates
    • Valid Standard First Aid and CPR certificate
    • Alberta Class 5Q (air brake endorsement)
    • Post-secondary technical education or specific work experience in irrigation or turf maintenance

Duties are based on 40 hours/week and shifts will be scheduled to cover a 7-day/week operation. We offer a Hours of Work Averaging Agreement of 4 x 10-hour shifts/week providing you with 3 days off to enjoy all that Banff has to offer. The wage will be between $24.00 and $30.00 per hour depending on your experience. 

Employment will commence on February 18, 2025 or March 4, 2025 and the position is eligible for group health, dental and retirement benefits following the appropriate waiting periods.
